On January 19th, 2021, second graders carried out a writing workshop where they studied two different genres: informational texts (Biography) and realistic fiction.

During the Language Arts class with Mr. Carlos Ballanilla Torres, they followed the writing process steps in order to structure their final products, but there was something different during the development of the workshop this time.

Instead of using their notebooks or graphic organizers to write their ideas, they used recycled materials such as cardboard boxes, colored cardboard and plastic bottles to decorate their own boxes.

This “storybox” was meant to be used as a graphic organizer in which students had to write the main idea of the text, the important details and the final product. Also, students could draw the cover of their texts on the upper side of the box.

There was an outstanding text written by Isabel Fernandez Cuetia (2A grade) about Nelson Mandela and the relevant facts in his life. She shared her text during an online class.

This is what she wrote:

“Nelson Mandela was a person that stopped race abuse (racism) all over the world. Nelson Mandela was a boy when race abuse existed. Nelson Mandela did not like that. He wanted to stop it. When he was exactly 30 years old he went the national congress of Africa trying to combat all the injustice suffered by people of color. That is what they would teach when he was taken to Robben Island where he spent 16 years in a tiny cell. After Robben island he was in two more prisons. In total he spent 27 years of his life locked up. He became a symbol of struggle because everyone wanted to get him out of prison”
